Dana (Pali) is the practice of offering generosity. In many Buddhist traditions the teachings are, and have always been, freely offered to those who wish to receive them. For thousands of years, this practice has been held by monastics, who have been supported by the generosity of lay followers. During my years of practice and study in South and Southeast Asia, I was a beneficiary of this ancient lineage. Monasteries and retreat centers would feed me, house me, and most importantly, teach me the Dhamma, without ever charging me a dime. I would then have the opportunity to offer a donation that reflected my gratitude and also aligned with my financial capacities. This kind of reciprocity allows for the practice of awareness, curiosity, renunciation, compassion, generosity and more, for those on both sides of the exchange. The world and economy are rather different in our modern Western context. Still, the Insight Meditation tradition has remained committed to upholding this tradition as best it can. And, while I do engage with contract work, as much as I am able, I offer the teachings free of charge. Your generous support helps me to sustain my participation in this gift economy. Thank you.
My preference is to receive donation via Venmo @Beau-Demkar
